Lucas Jumalon won the 2026 WSOP Main Event on August 5 for $10,000,000. He is 22, from Spokane, and came in with just over $180,000 in career earnings — his best previous score was $22,945. He walked into the final table with 194,000,000 chips, more than the next three stacks put together, and never gave the lead up. Lauri Saaskilahti took second for $6,000,000 after starting seventh in chips. Ninth place still paid $1,000,000.

After a small-blind open and a big-blind call, the A♠A♥6♦ flop gets a bet 80.1% of the time (79.6% at a third of the pot, 0.5% at three quarters, check 19.8%). That is the reverse of the 3.0% seen on the 6♣6♦3♥ paired board — and what split them is not that the board paired, but whose card paired. Hands making trips with an ace run 88 combos to 66, and 16 of those combos, A-K and A-Q, are absent from the calling range entirely.

On 9♥8♥7♣ after a button open and a big blind call, the big blind checks 76.2% and leads 23.7% — the first spot in this series where the lead is a real strategy rather than a rounding artifact. Range advantage has not flipped: equity is still 48.5% against 51.5%. What changed is the gap and where each side's strong hands sit.

After a big blind three-bet and a button call, the flop 8♦5♣2♠ gets a two-thirds-pot bet 97.8% of the time. The odd part: of the big blind's 83 combos, exactly three paired this board — the A5s — and none of 88, 55 or 22 is in the range at all. The bet goes anyway because the range splits into 36 combos of overpairs and 40 combos of ace-high with nothing in between. A polarized shape bets big.

On A♦K♠2♥ in a 3-bet pot the big blind bets 100% of the time. Checking is 0.0% — not one combo out of 63. In the seven earlier spots its default was to check, between 76.2% and 99.9% of the time. What flipped is mainly the preflop action: the big blind three-bet instead of calling, so it owns the top of this flop while the button four-bet its pocket aces and kings away. And with an SPR of 4.0 there is no later street to defer to.

A kicker is the highest side card that isn't part of your main hand — it breaks ties when two players share the same rank. High card uses 4 kickers, one pair 3, two pair 1, trips 2; straights, flushes, full houses, and straight flushes have none. It's why AK beats AQ when the board pairs an ace.

This is a plain-English glossary of the poker terms that actually come up in a Texas Hold'em game, grouped by how you'll meet them — betting actions, positions, hands and board, player types, money, and table situations. Start with the 'most confused' terms below (check vs call, set vs trips, cooler vs bad beat), then browse by category. Terms with a deeper guide link straight to it.

Of the 169 starting hand types, only a small top slice — about 15–20% of the hands you're dealt — is profitable for a beginner. Big pairs (AA–TT) and AK raise from any seat; the later you act, the wider you open — from ~13% under the gun to ~43% on the button (wider again in 6-max). Start with a simplified chart, add GTO preflop charts once raise-or-fold is automatic.

The bubble is the spot right before the money, where one more elimination pays everyone else. Because busting means winning nothing, survival is worth more than the chips you'd gain — so calling ranges tighten hard while shoving stays wide. Big stacks attack, medium stacks are the most trapped (not short stacks), and on a multi-seat satellite bubble you fold everything, even aces, once your seat is locked.

Not the way you do in blackjack — the deck reshuffles every hand and too few cards are exposed, so tracking high and low cards gives you no edge. But poker has its own legal counting: counting outs, using blockers, and tracking dead cards to read what your opponent can't have.

Implied odds are the extra chips you expect to win on later streets when your draw hits. They let you profitably call a draw that pot odds alone say to fold — but only if stacks are deep and your opponent will actually pay you off.

Folding is the most underrated skill in poker — a fold's worst outcome is zero, while a losing call bleeds chips every time. A solid player folds around 75–85% of hands before the flop, releases missed hands and weak draws that don't meet their pot odds after it, and — hardest of all — lays down strong-but-beaten hands when a passive opponent's line screams value. Most players don't call too much because they can't read hands; they call because the chips already in the pot feel like theirs. They aren't.

A 3-bet is the first re-raise before the flop — called a 3-bet because the big blind is the first bet, the open-raise the second, and your re-raise the third. Value-3-bet a tight core (QQ+, AK) plus a few suited blocker bluffs like A5s, size it around 3x the open in position and 4x out of position, and keep your overall 3-bet frequency near 6–10%. When you're the one facing a 3-bet, 4-bet your premiums, call the hands that play well, and fold the rest — folding more than 'balanced' against low-stakes players who never bluff.

Limping is entering a pot preflop by just calling the big blind instead of raising or folding. Open-limping (being first in) is almost always a mistake — you can't win the pot preflop, you give up initiative, and good players punish you. But limping isn't always wrong: completing the small blind, over-limping speculative hands behind other limpers, and some live and short-stack spots are legitimate exceptions.

A bad beat is when you get your money in as a heavy favorite — usually 80% or more — and lose because your opponent hits a lucky card to 'suck out' on you. Unlike a cooler, you were ahead the whole way; the deck just betrayed you at the end. It stings, but bad beats are actually a sign you're playing in a profitable game.

Rake is the small cut the cardroom takes from each pot to host the game — usually 2.5–10% up to a cap of a few dollars. Most rooms take nothing if everyone folds before the flop ('no flop, no drop'). It hits low-stakes and short-handed players hardest, and rakeback returns a slice of it to regulars.

You flop a set with a pocket pair 11.8% of the time (7.5-to-1 against), flop a flush with two suited cards just 0.84%, and complete a flopped flush draw by the river 35% of the time. Every number below is derived from the deck, not guessed.

An out is any card left in the deck that improves your hand to a likely winner. Count them, then convert: multiply outs by 4 on the flop or by 2 on the turn to get your rough % to hit. A flush draw is 9 outs ≈ 36% by the river.

By the river you'll make one pair 43.8% of the time, two pair 23.5%, a flush 3.0%, and a full house 2.6% — while a royal flush shows up just once in about 31,000 hands.

APT Incheon 2026 wrapped on Aug 16 at Paradise City Casino, Incheon. Hong Kong's Stephen Pang won the Main Event for KRW 411,180,000 (~$293,700) after a three-handed ICM deal, topping a record 1,393-entry field with a KRW 3,008,880,000 prize pool. Runner-up Shoumin Zhang (China) took KRW 366,500,000 (~$261,785), and the top three also earned APT Championship 2026 Main Event seats (~$10,000 each). Foreign nationals only (Korean citizens without overseas residency cannot enter). Seoul is ~1 hour away — for the next stop, the poker trip and the Korea trip are still the same trip.

EPT Barcelona 2026 ran Aug 16–29 at Casino Barcelona. Italy's Manuel Ferrari won the €5,300 Main Event for €1,002,488, beating 1,823 entries for a share of the €8,841,550 prize pool. For 2027: the cheapest online route is the Power Path from $0.50 → Gold Pass (€5,300 ME seat + €1,100 side event + 8-night hotel + €690 expenses). You need a PokerStars Live account and a valid passport, and hotels sell out early — August is peak season in Barcelona.

In a poker tournament you pay a fixed buy-in for chips, blinds increase on a timer until one player holds all chips. Top 10–15% of players cash. Formats include freezeout, PKO, satellite, and deepstack — enter via direct buy-in, satellite, or online pre-registration.

In Texas Hold'em you always play the best 5-card hand from 7 (2 hole cards + 5 community cards) — using both hole cards, one, or none at all (playing the board). Scan all 7 cards in a fixed order: flush → straight → paired ranks → high card.

Blinds are forced bets posted before cards are dealt. The small blind sits left of the dealer button and the big blind to their left; the big blind — usually double the small blind — is the table's betting unit.

Poker positions are seat names measured from the dealer button — UTG, lojack, hijack, cutoff, button, and the blinds — and they move one seat clockwise every hand. Preflop, UTG acts first and the big blind last; postflop, the small blind acts first and the button last. Physical seat numbers never move; positions do.

Texas Hold'em gives each player 2 hole cards, uses 5 community cards, and the best 5-card poker hand wins after four betting rounds.

In cash games, chips are real money and blinds stay fixed. In tournaments, chips are survival equity, blinds rise, and payouts depend on where you finish.

A straddle is an optional blind bet — usually twice the big blind — posted before the cards are dealt. It buys the straddler the last action and the option to raise preflop, doubling the stakes. In almost every case it's a -EV play, and outside cash games it's almost never allowed.

Ties are broken in a fixed order: hand rank first, then the cards that make the hand, then kickers from highest to lowest. Same pair → higher first kicker wins; identical five cards → split pot. Suits never decide a tie.

A short stack (roughly under 20–25 big blinds) can't play normal postflop poker, and from about 15 big blinds down it switches to push/fold: move all-in first-in to keep your fold equity, and never open-limp or min-raise-then-fold. Shove wider from late position, keep your calling range tighter than your shoving range, and don't blind down to nothing 'waiting for a hand' — your fold equity is the weapon, and it fades hard below about 8 big blinds.

A continuation bet (c-bet) is a bet on the flop by the player who raised preflop. The modern rule isn't 'c-bet every flop' — it's to bet the flops that favor your range (high, dry boards like K-7-2) small and often, and check the ones that favor your opponent (low, connected boards like 7-6-5). Size small — about one-third pot — on dry boards, big — two-thirds or more — on wet ones, c-bet less out of position when you were the single raiser (as the out-of-position 3-bettor it flips to almost always), and much less multiway.

A cooler is a hand where you lose a big pot with a very strong holding you could never correctly fold — like pocket kings running into aces, or a set losing to a bigger set. Unlike a bad beat, you were behind the whole way and no lucky card 'sucked out' on you: you played it right and still lost. It's poker's most honest kind of disaster.

Korea's top autumn marathons (Chuncheon Oct 25, JTBC Seoul Nov 1, Garmin Run Nov 15) align with perfect running weather. Paradise City Casino near Incheon Airport runs year-round cash games — foreigners only, 10 min from the terminal. One trip covers both. For 2026 the only foreign entry window is JTBC's — the deadline depends on the channel you register through.

Being in position means you act last — you see every opponent's decision before spending a chip. Solver and database studies suggest out-of-position players capture only about 60–85% of their equity — which puts you above 100% when you're in position. That's why UTG opens ~13% of hands and the button ~43% — and why position rewrites every c-bet, bluff, and pot-control decision postflop.

At showdown, the last player to bet or raise shows first. If the river was checked through, the first active player left of the button shows first. You can muck without showing if you lose, but whoever called the river bet can ask to see the bettor's hand.

Going all-in means betting every chip you have. You can only win what you matched from each opponent (the main pot). Extra bets from bigger stacks form a side pot that only the players who covered them can win. An all-in for less than a full raise does NOT reopen the betting for players who already acted.

Texas Hold'em has 5 betting actions: check (pass for free), bet (open the round), call (match a bet), raise (increase it — the minimum raise equals the previous bet or raise), and fold. You can only check when there is no live bet in front of you — preflop that normally means only the big blind (or whoever posted a live straddle).

A flush (five cards of one suit — ~0.197% of five-card deals) always beats a straight (five in sequence, ~0.392%) in Texas Hold'em — because a flush is rarer: across all seven cards to the river, 3.03% versus 4.62% for the straight.

Preflop, the player to the left of the big blind bets first. On the flop, turn and river it is the first live player to the left of the button — usually the small blind. (Heads-up flips this.) The hand itself runs blinds → hole cards → preflop → flop → turn → river → showdown, with four betting rounds.

ICM (Independent Chip Model) converts your tournament chip stack into its real prize-money value, using the payouts and everyone's stacks. Because you only win one first prize, doubling your chips never doubles your money — so the chip leader's stack is worth less than its chip share, and short stacks are worth more. That gap is why you fold hands on the bubble that would be easy calls in a cash game.

Equity is your share of the pot — the slice your hand is owed on average once all the cards are dealt, with split pots counted pro rata. You call when your equity beats the pot odds, but position and betting mean you rarely keep your full equity — and fold equity lets you win pots even when your hand is behind.

To calculate pot odds, divide the amount you must call by the total pot after your call. Calling $50 into a $150 pot = 50 ÷ 200 = 25% — so you need at least 25% equity to make the call profitable.

Yes — poker hands can tie. A pot is split (a chop) when two or more players show down the identical best five-card hand. Suits never break the tie, and any leftover odd chip goes to the first tied player left of the dealer button.

On Q♠9♠2♠, where all three flop cards share a suit, the big blind checks 88.8%, bets small 8.0% and bets big just 3.2%. The large size almost vanishes because the nuts are fixed: a made flush gets called by small bets anyway, and the bigger you bet without a flush, the more your callers narrow down to flushes. Even the nut flush checks 69.9% on average — and non-nut flushes check more, at 81.4%.

After a small-blind open and a big-blind call, the 7♦6♦5♣ flop gets a bet just 9.6% of the time and a check 90.4%. Pot, stack, SPR, bet size and both ranges are identical to the previous spot — only the three board cards changed, and the bet collapsed from 67.4% to 9.6%. The range edge won preflop was an edge in high cards, and a low connected board erases it outright. Equity flips to 49.6% against 50.4% and the out-of-position realization drops to 85.3%.

After a small-blind open and a big-blind call, the K♥T♦6♠ flop gets a bet 67.4% of the time and a check 32.6%. In the seven single-raised pots earlier in this series the out-of-position player bet only 0.1% to 23.7% — and two things changed, not one. Here the out-of-position player is the raiser rather than the caller, and the board favors that range. Together they push the out-of-position equity realization to 103.1%.

On Q♥T♥7♠ in a 3-bet pot the big blind bets two thirds of the pot (14.9bb) 98.4% of the time. The small size gets 0.7% and checking 0.8% — together barely one combo out of 73. One board earlier, on A♦K♠2♥, the same range split its sizing 57.8/42.2. What collapsed the split is not strength but price. On a board this wet the size is decided by what it costs the caller to keep drawing, and the small bet does not charge enough.

On the low rainbow flop 6♠5♥2♦ the big blind checks 96.8% and leads just 3.2% — even though its 48.3% equity is the second highest of the seven spots where it defends. Only one hand makes a straight here, 4-3, and neither range holds it. Nobody has a top end, so nobody leads out of position. The action comes later: re-solve the same tree to see past the flop and the big blind check-raises a 1.8bb bet 14.9% of the time, almost all of it draws.

On the low paired flop 6♣6♦3♥ the big blind checks 97.0%. The odd part is that it holds more trips than the button: 26 six-x combos against 20. It checks anyway, because only 18.4% of its range has anything beyond the board's pair, and the other 81.6% is a high-card contest the button wins. What does gain value is any pocket pair above a six — TT is 76.0% equity here.

On Q♠J♦T♠ after a button open and a big blind call, the big blind checks 99.9% — even though 68.4% of its range holds a draw. The cause is nut advantage: straights 10.5% against 7.1%, sets 2.0% against 0.7%, overpairs 2.6% against 0%. Equity realization splits 77.9% against 119.4%, the widest gap of the three dry-to-wet flops so far.

On K♠8♦3♣ after a button open and a big blind call, the big blind checks 99.8% of its range — an even purer range check than the 98.2% on an ace-high flop. Two things cause it: the big blind holds no overpair here, because AA three-bets preflop, and equity realization splits 80.7% against 116.7%.

A 'fish' is poker slang for a weak, losing player the stronger players ('sharks') make their money from. Fish play too many hands, call too much, and can't fold — and the famous line warns that if you can't spot the fish at your table, you're it. It's the single most important read in the game: find the fish, or become one.
